High Street Medical Group
The 3 partners want to ensure that, if one of them falls ill, the practice's profit
margin will not jeopardised by having to pay for a locum.
They know from past experience that their PCT is unlikely to provide funding.
The practice employs 2 salaried GPs and their contracts stipulate that they should have
locum insurance in place. Although they could arrange this themselves, independently of
the practice, the partners decide to set up a group policy through Practice Cover which
includes the three of them, the 2 salaried GPs and the practice manager. This ensures
that the premiums for all six people benefit from a group discount and it means that the
partners can ensure that the Practice Cover locum insurance remains in force for as long
as it is needed.
Village Dental
Village Dental have concerns that, with one partner in her 50s and one in his 30s, with 2
associates, one of whom is in his late 40s, locum insurance premiums for the older dentists
could prove prohibitively expensive.
However, with Practice Cover, locum insurance premiums are not affected by age, sex or smoker
status, so they should have no concerns about older individuals being charged disproportionately
higher premiums.
Main Road Vets
Matthew is seeking bank finance to set up his new practice. A requirement of the lender is
that he should have locum insurance in place.
At this early stage in his career, he feels that he only needs locum insurance cover that provides
a weekly income in the event of illness or accident and he does not need the additional cover
which is often available. He is also keen not to over commit himself financially, so takes out
Locum Insurance with Practice Cover.
This 'entry level' cover is sufficient for his purposes for the time being and he is safe in the
knowledge that, should his circumstances change, he can upgrade to Locum Insurance Plus, with no
further underwriting.
Avenue Opticians
This flourishing practice has a large number of associates, many of whom are young practitioners.
The owners feel that they could absorb the short term absence of any of the practitioners, for up
to 3 months, without needing to claim from their locum insurance but that, for any illness or
accident resulting in absence of longer than 3 months, they would need to bring in a locum.
They also feel that they would like cover for other events which might lead to unexpected absence,
such as having to give staff compassionate leave, or jury service leave.
They, therefore, decide to take out Locum Insurance Plus, which provides cover for a number of
eventualities besides illness and accident and, with a 3 month excess period, they are able to
keep the premium at a manageable level.
These case studies are fictional and have been produced to illustrate how locum insurance from
